Whisper Blood Tongue
My teenage bedroom was like an esot-
eric planetarium. I liked to fill it with
cherry pits, and moth wings, random
love letters to nobody, and old glasses
of stolen, stagnant red wine with fruit
flies floating at the top. I liked to have
long, chatty Cosmo Girl conversations
with Lilith while sitting on the itchy floor
under the foot of my bed—to have her
ask for me if the moon would be kind
enough to dance with me at my ex’s
funeral; a pearl-flooded nave where
I’d brood over his yearbook photo-
graph as pungent heaps of ashen
camphor and bat’s blood stew.
