White Walls

15 years young the day I was arrested My prison was no cell, but a hospital room Soft pillows, hard pills White lights, black nights Keep your wits they'd drone Always be happy they'd say I found no retreat in therapy or groups I had given up. Vibrant words sprang from the page, Shakespeare's sonnets Poe's Poems Angelou's anecdotes They all seemed to work I read and re-read and what was once foreign was now learned I felt their struggles I heard their cries I knew their hurt Their poem's were stronger than any pill I had been forced to take Their poems saved me They'll save you too ,if you let them
