Who?
What have I done?
What can I be?
I tried to run.
Run away from the opinions of others.
I tried to lay in my bed,
Hide under the covers.
I tried to masquerade my fears.
A fear of the unknown.
A fear of what I will become.
I’m becoming fully realized
And I’m frightened.
Excited but scared
Trembling but enlighted.
I took one look in the mirror
And it took away my breath
I’m black in a society that doesn’t love me
How will they treat me?
I turned away from my reflection
How will they love me?
I don’t need fear in my heart
When I wasn’t conceived with it from the start
I’m proud of my skin and all of it’s compliments
All of my hair and all it’s parts
All of my history and I’m waiting to show my heart.
So I’m afraid of what I would become?
The mystery of what I can I can be.
A black man who knows his worth in society
That sounds dangerous to me
But I learned to love the trill
And enjoy the ride
So what have I done?
Realized my worth
What can I be?
Everything I want
How will they treat me?
Maybe with disrespect
How will they love me?
That doesn’t matter cause I love myself.
