who am i

2011

Forced out of childhood

by my father.

His sharp voice over the phone

yelling “momma’s little princess”

I had cried myself to sleep that night.

Everything had seemed to get darker around me

I noticed the world and it’s evil ways.

I soon would learn that the world did not believe

that I, then an 11 year old, did not belong.

Did not belong to live.

In January, I would lose my father

the site of the police and ambulance surrounding my house

I would also lose what was left of my innocence

it was all too dark, and I was taught I did not belong

2018.

I start college. I saw a whole new world.

One in which I could truly be myself

One where I could be out and not live in fear

accepted for me

for once, finally happy

but I know I am living in a bubble

As I sit here, still closeted to my hometown

I realize there is so much ahead

the light on the horizon is just now rising

I was never born to live in this small town

I know my potential now

And to think, I had almost come face to face with my father again.
