Who Am I

Day in and day out the tv screen glows

Constantly showing us how everything “should go”

Left wing, right wing, the right foundations and creams

Making young girls minds turn

They look in the mirror and scream

Who am I without that stuff

The “rights” and “wrongs” of society

I am the underdog, outcast, the person I always wanted to be

Never wear make-up unless it’s needed

Formal locations only

Not to make my face look nice for some 3 second selfie

If you saw my photos filter free, who do think I was?

A young black girl fighting her way to get ahead of the curve

If I never had a filter

If I never had to hold my tongue

I would scream til everyone could hear me

I would be “that one”

The one who’s screaming to show that there’s more than debt and a college degree

I would be screaming louder and louder to show no one is like me

I would keep my face the same

Beauty does fades

No matter how many pounds are thrown on the face

The mirror shows the truth of your ways

I am my reflection and more

I am what I see

I am the girl who creates more than what you see in a captured selfie
