Who are you?
Who are you?
They ask scornfully, doubtfully, hopefully
They assume I am this or that or the other thing
They’re wrong
I am an enigma
I am a human being
A human being who refuses to be defined
by words and ideas
by the expectations hoisted so casually upon her generation
I am a heart and a soul and a bag of bones
put on this earth for a reason I do not understand
but choose to accept
I am a fighter
I refuse to give up when they tell me I am incapable of the things they pushed me to do
I am a dreamer
I spend hours thinking of could bes and what ifs
I ponder distant lands and bustling markets
I plan my life to fulfill my dreams
I adapt when I land among the stars after shooting for the moon
And I worry that I am not good enough for my dreams to come true
I hope that my life will be as good as I have planned it to be
I am a warrior and a friend
An apparent paradox, but that’s me
I am kind and fierce and ambitious until the end
I am an enigma and a human
A body and a fighter
A dreamer and a warrior and a friend
I am all I can be, work to be
And all I aspire to be
Right now though? I’m just me.
