Who We Are

Location

History is a shaped, definite, repetitive concept,
The blood spilt through time seems to come from the same culprit.
No matter how people strive to change it, cut out indifference,
Death and violence finds us all through time and ignorance.

Everyone has seen the sadness, heard the cries,
"Equality for everyone!" is the new slogan with which we sympathize.
But people still fight each other even on this, so many being ostracized
So tell me how history isn't repeating and what this all justifies.

Some fight for freedom, others stick with hatred,
Argument's being thrown out stating marriage is sacred.
But so is love, for everyone, why must it be evaluated
On whom you're with, for what purpose - love shouldn't be negotiated.

We hear of laws being written to take same-sex marriage out of the picture
Hearing arguments for procreation and religion, like that's a fair lecture.
I grow up fearing for humanity, not wanting daily to hear such bicker
That only says to me we haven't learned from the past, the death and hatred - so bitter.

But hope is not truly lost, some days I can still smile about what the news brings
The Supreme Court, the rallies actually calling for equality!
I see love, compassion, and understanding motivating such deeds
Instead of ignorance, fear - you know, the usual things.

You can walk, you can run, you can hide from changes influence
But don't think for a second this battle will end because of indifference.
Because people will still rise, fight for what's right, we must,
Or we are truly doomed - why would we not fight for the right to love?

I fight so that loved ones never live in fear of who they are
I fight so that this ignorance doesn't add to humanity's vulgar repertoire
Of madness, hatred, and a fear of change - that's just bizarre!
Fight for equality with me; let history not define who we are.
