Wholehearted (An Ode to Poetry)
Poetry.
As an adolescent,
I was drawn in by your sweet benevolence.
Now & Laters and Pixie sticks could never compare
To the gentle kiss
You’d give me every night from listening to your lyrics.
Poetry, my dear.
You were truly my husband and never just a friend.
I never understood until one day you showed me
That friendship ultimately ends
Even if there are a couple things that needed mending.
You promised me we’d be in this together forever
Like Bonnie and Clyde
You promised me you’d sit through every cry
And that no matter what you’d always be by my side.
Poetry, what’s not to love about you?
You’re kind
You’re respectful
You always keep my mind going
And you’ve upgraded the way I think about life so I’m not too technical
I can rely on your message to touch me
Whether its acapella or in a song
I know that you love me
Because you know you’re right to tell me when I’m wrong.
Poetry.
Oh, my first love.
The one that all the boys were jealous of.
The one that all the girls wanted to hug
But you didn’t want them.
You chose me because you wanted me
To share your light to the world
Believe, my love, there will be a fluorescent glow
From this small girl.
I could go on and on about you, Poetry
It would take years to make them understand what you mean to me
So I will just tell you this:
If I was a door, I wouldn’t be able to function without Poetry
Because to my heart, he has the key.
