"Why"
The pressure of existence
Causing my life to be inconsistent
With the rising of the sun I knew
What was meant to be done
Like the changing of seasons, I
Knew for a fact it wasn't going to be easy
Alone I stand a single star in the night
A silent figure as I rise with the moon
Previously chained bonded held down
By society, being told what I could never do
Being told what I could never change
What I could never acheive
The darker complexion, the one I've
Always seen in my reflection, the one that was always to blame.
The hate that never seemed to be contained
Engulfed our souls, changed our worlds
Yet, a single strand of our people
Compared to a thousands strands
Broke those chains, rose with the moon
To become the silent figure who looms
Over with the moon
Who looks over the daily battles that
Society throws at him
Who looks over the racial discrepancies
That are said to him
"You're smart for your kind"
"You're quite intelligent for your race"
"I clutch onto my bag whenever you
Enter the elevator cause I heard your kid of people
Like to snatch bags"
"You're not good enough for this job , you're just not qualified"
But...not being qualified is just
Another way to sugarcoat it
Because of our skin tone
We are labeled as a threat
To society
Because of our skin tone
We are labled as a threat to
Humanity
A darker pigmentation has held
Us in chains
Two centuries later and the Negro
Still not free
But all we ever did was be human
False acusations off of false asumptions
Bang bang the policemen gun sang
Before we could even excercise our
First Amendment
But all we ever did
Was be human
You cut my skin, I cut your skin
We both bleed the same blood
We both feel the same pain
We both shed the same tears
But why are we treated so differently
The lackof intelligence you people failed to have
Held us back
But, brothers and sisters
Now we are stronger
Now we are wiser
And now we shall overcome
