Why
turn back the clock
2012
2000
1900
1800
then it all comes back
the green lady
who mouthed the words freedom to us
we pull into the island
our ship overflowing with people like me
immigrants
“Welcome to America”
an official looking guy told us
we were given numbers
then waited in the never ending lines
finally it was our turn
a man looked at us
asked our names
my father told him all of our names
then we saw a man in a white coat
who told us we were all healthy, then said
“Welcome to America the Land of Freedom for All”
turn the clock forward
1800
1900
2000
2012
immigrants used to be welcome here
now we build walls
increase boarder security
to keep them out of
America
