Why

Why should anyone be defined by their body?

Or their sexuality?

Why should we change for you

When you wouldnt be willing to do

The same

It's such a shame

Watching people battle for attention

No not even that watching them battle for affection

The need to feel loved

When they finally get it it's like a drug

That they don't quite get into

Nothing will do

They wont get addicted and keep it up

They just get bored and give it up

Move on to the next one

Hoping it sticks until they're all done

And they've gone through everything available

Wishing that they were able

To take back all the time they wasted

On something so over rated

Something not everyone gets or wants

Something that some people flaunt

So tell me

Why should someone be defined by their body?

Why does it offend you so that we aren't all cookie-cutter images of this thing you want us to be?

Why does it matter if someone is black or white?

Why do we have to fight?

Why does it matter if someone is straight or gay?

Or who it is they speak to when or if they pray?

We are all the same stop trying to say otherwise

Because when you do you just cause a bigger divide

As one of my favourite poets once said “no baby is born racist”

And he's right they aren't but they also aren't born sexist

They aren't born judging they are taught that it's okay

But it's not okay not today or any day

Stop making them believe that it's just words that people say

That people who get hurt need to stop and force those feelings of offense away

That they aren't in the wrong

Other people just need to start singing THEIR song

Not the one we were all born with

That we were meant to have instead of causing this shift

In thinking

Which causes us to all tell ourselves to stop blinking

So we’ll know what the next trend is first

But what causes that thirst?

It's not your genuine feeling to want the trend

It's the acceptance and adoration that happens in the end

When you finally get those new shoes or that new bag

It's like we’re all playing tag

But no one knows whos it or where to run

This specific game of tag isn't fun

Why should we lock ourselves out behind our barricades?

Why not let everyone be themselves when they come of age?

Why does it matter what colour we are when we all bleed the same one?

If i were to hand you two bags of blood

For a transfusion that would save your daughter or son

How would you know which one to choose?

So that your child doesn't “lose”

What they “should have”

Because it doesn't matter whose blood is in the bag

If it will save your child, would you let them rot away?

Or give them the blood of someone who you say

Isn't right for things you say they control but they don't

And a part of you deep down knows it's true but you won't

Admit that this society we live in is wrong

We don't all need to sing the same song

There's a beauty

In the diversity

Of everyone singing their own

So when your thinking and alone

Can you tell me why does it matter?

Why should it matter?
