Why Do We?

Why do we eat our greens? Why green?

What about yellow, blue and red?

I don't mean to be rude or mean,

but why do we brush before bed?

"They keep us strong and lean,

and it prevents cavities," they said

But still, I don't understand.

Why are there police and firemen

Who willingly risk a foot and a hand

And then expect nothing to be given?

Then it hits me: "It must be something they adore!"

And then it brings me back to fourth grade.

As homework, we had to write a poem.

Mine was about an enchanted glade,

and a tiger made of chrome.

The next day, I read it aloud,

and receive applause from the crowd.

"Why do you write?" People ask me.

"Creativity, interest, and a broken heart,"

I usually reply, very slowly.

"But I also enjoy the feeling of trying to make art."
