Why I do it

I write poems as a way to say

Things I can’t express every day.

In my head the words don’t start,

Because they are locked within my heart.

But I write poems when words come to me;

When the shackled words become set free.

I’m not good at expressing what I feel,

But poetry makes my feelings real.

My poems may not be very long;

But, if you read carefully, my messages are strong.

If I did it day-to-day

It would take the meaning away.

I do it when happy, hurt, or mad;

Whether life is good or bad.

For the beautiful thing about poetry

Is that it has versatility.

The stronger your feelings you need to express,

The more likely poetry is at its best.

Poetry is not just a career

It’s feelings for the world to hear.

Although the art form can employ

It is meant as something to enjoy.

There’s no magic button that makes me go,

My poetry is spontaneous flow.

A professional poet should be fired

If (s)he were to write while uninspired.

So whether I’m feeling joy or depression,

I can always count on this artistic expression.
