Why I Run
Walk in the office, "Hey, doc"
"Please take a seat"
I sit. "So, what-"
"Cancer."
Just one little word. My parents cried.
Just one little word. Thought I would die.
Just one little word. We were empty inside.
Thirteenth summer, scorched by a dead sun.
For weeks I couldn't walk, much less run
Yet here I was, three months later
Crossing the starting line, my legs as my haters
Three point one miles of legs burning unquelled
I asked God, Oh where was a greater hell?
Huffing and puffing, running and walking
Tripping and stumbling, rising and driving
Almost there.
One last stretch. Spring!
Bending legs of furious flame
The whole world cheering my name
Cancer's hold is over, for me there's no more pain
Just a struggle to help others going through the same.
