Why Me?

he was too young

to see the world the way he did

all his scars came

from the hands that used to hold him

and the one who wiped his tears

now causes them to fall

but he didn't complain

he just took the pain

and added it to the burden on his back

and when he was about to crack

he said

God, why me?

when he was on his knees

pleading with the Lord

I've done nothing wrong

but I live in misery

they say be strong

but I know something else

will just come along

so God, why me?

as he grew up

the little girl from down the street

became his only friend

but her darkness grew too deep

and she drank her way

into a forever sleep

all he managed to say

was God, why me?

years and years went by

and as an old married man

sitting on his front porch looking at the sky

he finally got an answer to his prayer

Although at times he had to crack

and let the weight slip from his back

he said

God, I know why me

as he got down on his stiff knees

because all my suffering

has lead me to right here

and the things I hold most dear

God, I pushed through

I'm ready to come home to you

thank you for helping me see

why me
