Why Me?

Dear Death,

I don’t know who you think you are

Or why you think you can take these people from me.

Leaving me to think why,

Why did you have to leave?

Emotions fly high when I hear you’ve captured another-

Leaving my parents trying to joke,

As I repress tears trying not to think about it.

I think of all the people you’ve taken from me,

And what they did to deserve it.

Uncle David, who I barely have any memories of.

Pepere, who had to go on my birthday,

When I turned 7.

Grammy, who had to go months after Pepere.

Mark, whose death was so sudden,

No one pictured it was going to happen.

Sometimes you’re kind,

Taking them out of their misery,

Pepere, who had cancer spreading throughout his body,

Grammy, who had cancer that was agonizing.

I never know how to contain myself when someone I love dies.

I just think,

It was their time to go,

To spend their time with God,

And that usually helps me get through it.

But I will always wonder,

Why do they have to leave me?
