Why Poetry

When I was young I wanted to escape I wanted to dream No one could relate I couldn’t explain It wouldn’t come out I put the words on paper That were trapped inside my mouth Alicia Keys wrote poetry Langston Hughes too If they could write their problems Escape the world There’s nothing I could not do Poetry made me feel free It made my problems go away Poetry makes me smile Poetry makes my hope here to stay So when people ask why don’t I get angry, why I don’t cry and not stop? They say why poetry, I say why not? Damica Odom June 9, 2013
