Why? (The Sphinx’s Riddle)

Why do we crawl?

Why do we crawl, unable to speak for ourselves?

Why do we crawl, unable to support our own thoughts?

Why do we crawl, trying for movement, freedom, strength?

Why do we walk?

Why do we walk into the day blind, unknowing, uncertain?

Why do we walk into the same pitfalls day after day after day?

Why do we walk without direction, without purpose?

Why do we walk when there is everything else to be doing at once?

Why do we walk when it would be easier just to stand?

Why do we walk with the crowd?

And why do we walk against it?

Why do we walk the same routes, routes that we’ve carved into the earth with our own two feet?

And why is it so difficult to keep walking when you step outside of this route?

Why do we struggle?

Why do we struggle to walk on three legs when for so long we only needed two?

Why do we struggle to keep on breathing, to keep moving, to keep walking?

Why do we struggle to keep our head above water, above ground?

Why does what was once so natural now seem a wall?

And why, after all of this, do we get back up?
