Wife and Mistress~after Countee Cullen

Yet do I marvel at this curious thing: You turn to me, and your first word is "aid". You turn to her and your first word is "hi" I only exist in rooms when you say. You are in the room whenever she cries It’s because she's not boring with formality and her eyes look softer and she doesn't tell you honest things that you dislike and her sound is better and sweeter and the way she invites and the way she invites you in further even more It is! Is it not? Yet, I'm obedient, because I care. I sit here; wait for your return to near. I feed. I smile. I stay. I wish. I stare. I guess I'm a wife and she's the mistress.

For this poem, I wanted to explore the idea of being needed and wanted. In our lives, we are so focused on the things we want that we neglect the ones who love and support us most, which are the things we need.
