Winston's Dog
Wandering the paths of life
The past follows
An ephemeral shadow
Of all the things done
Of all the things said
All that has happened
All that has been seen
In there are the twin impostors of triumph
and of disaster
The bedfellows of love
and of loss
So to the peaks of joy
and the valleys of pain
There is more in that shadow
Something hidden, unknown
Entwined in the memories
Highlighting the disasters
Poking at loss
Feeding on the pain
Clouding the joy
Tainting the love
Diminishing the triumph
Loyally beside them all
A shadow for the shadow
Always there
Giving voice to insecurity
Potent fuel to overthinking
Strong encouragement to doubt
Smothering confidence
Trots the beast.
