Wish
I’ve racked my brain
With endless poems and words
Written by broken hearts and empty souls.
I thought these pieces would string together
Exactly how i feel
In the middle of the night
When I can’t sleep.
After reading so many emotions and stories,
I realized none of them were the right key for the lock.
Our story is not one already told.
We were never even together;
That bitter occurrence haunts me when I lie in bed at night,
Wondering what could’ve been but never was.
I wish I could stop clinging to the memories that have remained still in my mind,
And our old conversations paint a picture of our bright hour that lost light too soon.
You never hurt me, but I wish you did.
I wish I could hate you for leaving me,
But I never had you, so how could I?
I wish I could turn back time and do all the things I swore I couldn’t do.
Then, maybe, you would’ve been mine
And this poem would be floating in the air waiting for a broken heart that wasn’t yet broken.
I wish your name wouldn’t roll so bitterly off my tongue
And I wish I could say that you didn’t treat me so well,
So I could have a reason to tear away all our memories.
I wish I didn’t crave your hand intertwined with mine,
Using your thumb to rub mine so gently,
As we lay in the dark, silently.
