Wishes
Sometimes I wish I was small
Small enough to fit in a hand
So I can stay in your chest pocket
And listen to your heart beating
And so I can be near
A silent vigil even if you're unaware.
But then there are dangers when your small
Creatures that can snatch you up
Things too heavy that can crush
And then I might find some hole to hide in
And you wouldn't be able to find me
Or maybe you would forget me all together.
Sometimes I wish I was big
Big enough to tower over the trees
So I can protect you from everything
And you can listen to my heart beating fast for you
And then I could show you what I can see
By looking up at the stars and the sky.
But there are problems when you're big
Everything is too small
Nothing can keep your head covered
And maybe I might accidently hurt you
And then you couldn't trust me again
Or you would too terrified to come back at all.
Now I don't know what to wish for
That would make me better for you
Even though you tell me there's nothing wrong
And that I don't need to change anything
That I'm perfect to you just the way I am
Even though I can never seem to believe it.
