Wishing Well
If I was trapped on an island with no appreciable way off
Two flares launched and no one looking
Sitting alone with nothing but cold nights and an open calendar
No more tears, but one more dream clad quarter
I’d flip it into the salted fountain backing me into my new corner
Heads or tails it really doesn’t matter because my search and rescue is iffy / iffy
And my feet are dug deep into the cold edges of the universe
Shells cutting my ankles deeper than the beaches shackles
One more night scratching hash marks into the cave wall
No volleyball to make friends with, only one wish to make as the waves hit
Goodbye George, we will never meet again
Your sacrifice was noble and I shall mourn your death
I’m sure some creature will be delighted with your company
As was I with all your possibilities, I’d surely flip a coin for every fish
To have its wish and make the ocean a shimmering gift
For as they say; if fishes were wishes, we’d all cast nets
And now I’m casting and hauling in my wish again
Upon stars, upon quarters, upon lights I imagine
Sounds of boats that get me up at night screaming for my savior
Even when I know it’s just the whales
Oh good night solitude, goodnight stars, I’m too tired to count you again
For I have dreamed my dream, and wished my wish
As I toss my quarter into the blue abyss, and the words echo from my lips
I wish for; perseverance
