Within Society

That's who they expect me to be,

Like that pretty girl on the magazine.

But I'm no size two.

You are going to have to add a few.

That's who they want to see,

That pretty girl I'll never be.

They only care about the beauty they see.

See that girl, on the movie screen?

That's the girl they wish they had seen.

They want the girl who's a beauty queen.

They don't care about the person inside me.

They try to be a voice in my head,

Telling me who to be instead.

"Don't write," they say.

"Throw that piece of paper away."

I'm not that girl in the magazine.

Or on the movie screen.

I'm no beauty queen.

But I am who you see.

Now I know the problem isn't me.

The problem lies within society.
