The wolf behind your eyes

There is a forest

That you've always loved to escape into

To roam free between the branches

And run swift with the wind.

And maybe one day you decided

To lead a wolf from its depths

Bring it to the fire

And call it by your name.

The first few times were acceptable

Then they weren't

Then they snapped and turned on you

On your wolves

On your demons

On the wilder parts of your soul.

But the wolves that they tried to kill

They never really left you

You never really left you

How could you?

You just hid.

I see you

You're still right there

Hidden behind the broken eyes

Take up your sword

Unsheathe your claws

And walk back into the woods.

And maybe the monsters will leer at you;

Don't worry, that's what the sword is for

But even as you hold it out

Remember this.

Those monsters are just earlier versions

Of the person you are today

That you destroyed with every step you took

Further away from the forest

Earlier versions

Of the person you are today

That you destroyed with every step you took

Further back into the forest.

Don't fear yourself

Not like they did

Not like they did when they tried to stop you

From rising higher and calling out.

Compliance?

You?

I would never expect that

Howl for all you're worth

It won't be easy

But you already know that

So take up your sword

Unsheathe your claws

And walk back into the woods.
