The Wonder Years

I was 5

My cookie-cutter life crumbled before my eyes

Domestic bliss turned tragedy

My mother’s words ringing in my ears

Men are dogs

I was 13

My body attracted the eyes of drunk uncles

You have such a nice body

I don’t want it if its purpose is to satisfy the eyes of men like you

My mother’s words ringing in my ears

Men are dogs

I was 17

Those same drunk eyes followed me

But this time so did those hands

How do I escape this skin

My mother’s words ringing in my ears

Men are dogs

I was 18

Maybe I shouldn’t have been drinking

That’s when men sneak into your body at night

and crawl out as the sun rises

This body is not mine

My mother’s words ringing in my ears

Men are dogs
