Word

Words can hurt in ways

Stones never could

Certain words play

With your mind

Just like they knew it would

Ignore as you want

Try as you might

Those words

Can keep you up at night

Words can harm you

They inspire you

They can make you do something you’ll regret

They mold and shape you

Until you’re perfectly set

As everything they want you to be

You’re inferior, ignorant, blind

You’re stupid, and ugly

You have no mind

The repetition alone

Of these few short words show

That they can turn that light

That once shone bright

Into a plain, dull glow

How do I know

That all that I am

And all that I can be

Is not just something

That someone said to me

Words can encourage

Words can mock

Words can be leading

Like the hands of a ticking clock

Our words control our world

Much like our brain

When we don't voice our opinions

It makes us more insane

Some live off of the utilization of words

To make others feel worse

Most of our lives are lived

To escape that terrible curse

That’s why I try to express my indignations

In verse

Others will ridicule this skill of mine

They will try to crush

My little light that shines

Some say I’m egotistic, manic, sublime

I’m intolerant, irritating

Believe me it’s just a matter of time

Before you realize

That I have something on my mind

Though I am cryptic and can seem aloof

I’m just observing

Being loudly or quietly astute

Do not mistake my pride for egotism

And do not criticize me

For your envy

You can not hide

Just know

That even though

It hurts at times

I have enough people behind me

Who encourage my use of rhyme

Take my fire, give me shame

Take my soul, because you believe I am to blame

If you want to see me defeated

With the light gone from my eyes

You’ll be waiting for ages

Because like Maya I’ll rise
