In Words

In words I find wisdom. Whispers of caution and hints of advice, admonishing and scolding.

In Dorian Gray, cursed by vanity, corrupted by beauty,

the loss of innocence and formation of cruelty

There is a warning of reckoning.

In Victor Frankenstein, who wanted to be a new God,

but could not bear to face his own creation

There is a plea for humility.

In the rotten state of Denmark, in the sting of poison on Laertes’ blade,

as Horatio cradles Hamlet’s pallid face

There is a cry for peace.

But in words there is also encouragement. Shouts to live uproariously, to learn and to love.

In the fiery passion of  Jo March, who writes relentlessly and reads ravenously,

living as wild and as reckless and as fun as she can

There is a message of joy.

In the pure, sweet, romance of Lysander and Hermia,

Who left everything behind for a chance to be free

There is praise for tenderness.

In the magic of Neverland, in the rakish laughter of Peter Pan,

Never to grow, never to mature

There is a call for light and for laughter.

In words there are lessons and pride, calls to arms and calls to care.

There is inspiration and hope. The pages bleed red, the characters live and die.

They remind us that we are our own protagonists.

And that it is our time to warn and to teach, to love and to laugh.
