Words in Action

There are so many ways to say I love you.

So many forms to the three worded statement.

So many ways to show and to say and to feel the I love you--

So many ways to let you know.

I say it when I text you good morning.

I say it when I tell you to be safe.

When I say to wear your seatbelt, friend

(I don't want to imagine something bad happening)

(not one bit)

(not at all).

No texting while driving.

Did you eat your lunch?

When I remind you that you matter.

When I say you are beautiful.

I listen to the songs you like

And read your favorite books

I watch your favorite shows

And quote things you know

I tell you jokes to lighten your mood

I say it when I ask if you are cold

I say it when I give you hugs

And when I write for you.

I say it when you need me to listen

And when I cry with you alike.

I don't always need the words I love you.

I don't always feel the need to tell you.

Now there will be people

who claim to love you,

but are never around.

They may yell,

They may scream from the tops of their lungs.

They will brush you off,

Call you a silly little girl.

They may call you rude names,

even leave a mark,

but they come back and say they love you.

"It won't happen again"

They leave and come back,

"I've changed, I swear"

Don't listen to a word they say

Because true love is always being there.

If someone doesn't show you that they love you at all times, my dear

They don't love you at all.

I know it is a hard pill to swallow,

I know it tugs at your throat,

hurts your heart,

and burns your eyes,

but I tell you this for the best reason there is, my friend:

Because I love you for real.
