Words on Paper

Come, let’s make snow angels
On this vast expanse of white.
We’ve already made all these
scattered footprints
like those of birds daintily flitting about
as if teasing one another.
Squint your eyes closely. What do you see?
Do you see strange little markings like
chicken-scratch nonsense
in vague clumps?
Ha. Of course not.
I see something else all together.
And you do too, if you have not
simply left me standing here by now.
Such clumps of graphite marks
create new worlds.
But that is what is to become.
Right now the white expanse
is mostly bare
and so before we play together some more
and leave all of our little markings
on this wondrous place
let’s take a breather
to see what we’ve made
and marvel at what may come next.
