Words That Speak

Every once in a while I forget the words,
But most of the time they flow easy.
They resonate in my head,
in which I frequently reminesce,
But usually they never reach my tongue.
For me, my voice lies on paper-
feelings I never speak-
From my pencil they leak.
My words are a diary,
a key to every secret both unspoken and whispered,
But even I mistake the truth.
I know what it's like to feel empty-
like blank paper waiting for a story to be written,
But I know also what it means to read,
to remember again a forgotten emotion-
The words just lingering on my lips.
I can taste them on my tongue,
for the most part, they are bitter,
especially when I have to swallow-
They're left in my head to wander.
But if I speak these words can I still call them mine?
I would lose this forbidden piece-
the only solace I have left to find.
I may not always be brave,
but it takes courage to be alive.
If only you could understand-
but this language is my own.
It seems my tongue is mendacious,
our arguments constantly nullify,
but my poems are my hidden truths,
My poems indemnify.
for my words cannot be taken away,
I'd spend the day writing why it is I stay.
My self-control is frangible
but writing is the balm,
But sometimes the words must ferment before they can be told.
Write them down before they fade
like I would kiss before I cave.
They inspire me to be strong and show me my hidden side,
It happens when I wish to speak
that they and fear collide.
What are words that are never spoken?
are they any less true?
I never utter for you would misconstrue.
However, they aren't always lucid to even I,
I become lost in the hurricane's momentary eye.
Not everyone knows when they'll fall-
some believe it better to be cautious,
But some just carry bandages,
for they know they'll survive.
As for me, I try to cover my scars with hidden stories,
quietly humming a lullaby.
Facing a window with immaculate light,
with a sky that threatens rain and a promise of sunshine,
I write the words that maybe someday I'll speak.
