This World We Live In
I am the boy who gets bullied.
The one who's frightened to come to school
Each day the words and fists fly
And each time they hit their mark, they think it's cool.
I am the girl in the corner.
The one kids ask out as a joke
A seemingly never-ending game they love to play
And each night it's my pillow with tears I soak.
I am the man sleeping on the sidewalk.
The one with no place else to go
I beg for food with a grimy, outstretched hand
And my cardboard box sagging low.
I am the woman with no money and no job.
The one with piling bills and little hungry stomachs
Gone is my husband, who died defending others
And gone are the days of fun and family picnics.
I am the world filled with people.
The ones who are hurting, homeless, and hopeless
While others are plentiful, painless, and prosperous
And I just keep spinning, slowly and timeless.
