Worth

Shouldn't you be happy? Valedictorian sure that's worth something If everything was handed to you, would you run away? You're running after something like a bullet in a train And yes I want you to be happy but I don't know where to guide you I'm feeling more and more certain the mistake would be to hide you

Your poem really resonated with me. I just started college this fall, and financing it has been scary. Sometimes I feel like they give scholarships out for everything but the things that I'm truly good at. I hope that your financial experience gets better, and that you will be rewarded for your efforts. I can't say that I've ever had it as hard as you do, but I know what it feels like to be left empty-handed when we deserve payback. Hang in there.

-Fahiru

I wrote this about lacking adequate money to go to college, although I am Valedictorian. I will have to take out loans for upwards of $30,000 while some of my classmates are going for free because of vocal talent or because their parent works there. I thought it was unfair but I didn't want to write a poem addressing that. I just wanted to address what was inside, and why I felt I needed to go to this college instead of some tinier college that would have given me a full ride. I guess you can say in a lot of ways I'm really stubborn about things, this being no exception. I want to major in Chemistry but I still have a true passion for writing, English, and languages. I feel that going to a school which does not fully support the creative arts as much as it supports science would be a mistake; yet these institutions (especially the one I have selected) will not give a Valedictorian (with ample community service; I've really put so much time into everything I've ever done in high school) a full ride.
