Wrapping Our Heart's Around the Idea of Growth

Tiny hands and fluffy white curls cuddled up against mom

Not a worry in the young girl’s head,

Only thoughts of how she could convince mommy to let her have her first sleepover

Time then seemed so slow

Life was simple and wonderful, everything was in reach of those tiny hands

Looking back, I would’ve told that girl to appreciate what she had then,

Not for what was to come

Appreciate the comfort which comes from the nightlight at the end of her bed,

The endless hugs and kisses from her brother’s before they were off to school,

Morning cartoons while eating captain crunch,

Family road-trips to California, filled with endless bickering and laughter

That girl, much older now, wishes nothing but to go back

Growing up can be difficult for our hearts to understand

We must adapt and change to what we want for our futures

We must leave thing’s behind and become what our younger selves needed growing up

It feels so scary getting old
