writing to light

Dear my flicker,

I miss you

Being across the table -

A warm cup

Every 7th day

Without miss, without fail.

A picture crafted

With delicate conviction

And shadowed with

The vignette of routine.

Give, and take, and give.

Souls investigating the world

On parallel lines,

Endless amounts in common;

Yet no definite point

Where they are together.

Because best intentions

Could not keep me from

My typical pattern of over-investment

And all of your promises –

Spoken and insinuated –

Captured me.

Blinded by your light.

Even as I was transplanted

And had to start all over –

Twice –

All of your promises

Turned out to be fireflies.

Beautiful, mysterious, hopeful –

But seasonal.

Temporary light.

Light with a life too grand

To be held onto for long.

In the passing days,

I savored every sip.

AND STILL NOW,

Some moments are salient,

Yet more are forgotten

Than those remembered.

Vulnerability strikes me

And whispers to my heart

I feel like I’ve failed.

But perspective is

Quite the character and

When it takes center stage

Helps me to know

I am not what I let myself think.

You are fireflies

But I am not the jar,

I am not meant to keep you.

I am the night sky

In one city

For one year.

A part of your flight,

But not the destination –

An atmosphere

Destined to interact with your light.

And being just that

Is humbling

And it is beauty

In its own way.

But even now,

With every warm cup

You come to mind as I remember you,

And envision your glorious flight.

I will never cease

To love and cherish and remember and wish for

You.

From my heart,

Your firework.
