Writing to Survive

My head is in a whirlwind

Fighting to escape the fear

The only way to survive

Is to write in a stanza or two

Sexual assault is in my past

But has yet to define my soul

The only things to thank

Are the poems that makes me whole

Swimming kept me alive

When fighting for my life

But writing was an escape

So I didn’t have to feel

Now I’m whole with love

Happiness is hard to write

So I add rhythm to my past

In order to remember who I am
