Written Above

The sky is full

Of messages

Secret words

Only the few

Can truly understand.

The old man,

Wizened by the years

With bones that creak

Like old rocking chairs.

He can read

The sky:

He can tell when

It will rain or

Snow or fog.

When the day will be perfect

And what tomorrow

Might bring.

Each bird is a letter

To him, another part

Of the tale to tell.

Winter is near,

Or summer is

Around the bend.

All this is comprehended

In his world-weary mind.

The children, though,

Are the more blessed.

They don’t know

When it will rain

Or snow.

They cannot tell

If the day will be clear,

But theirs are

The pure hearts,

The simple souls.

Every cloud

And patch of blue

Is an adventure

In their avid gaze.

Each puffy cumulus

A foundation for their castles

In the air.

No, they don’t know

About the world,

But ask them about

The heavens above,

And their words will bubble forth,

For they see

What we cannot:

The message of design

And beauty

And love

Written in the sky

By Someone

Who cares.
