She said,"I want to be heard! I want my voice to ring out!"
"But I'm just a black girl who they expect to sit back and pout."
"I want to be heard! I want my emotions to flow!"
"Something like a river or a garden beginning to grow."
Young black girl, go speak your mind!
Let it go and wander like it’s something you have to find.
While it wanders, why don't you dream too?
Dream of faith, dream of love, and dream of everything true to you.
Young black girl, is there anything else?
She sat in silence then said what she felt:
"Why don't I look like the others? Why are my lips so big?"
"Why is my hair so puffy and my skin dark as a fig?"
Young black girl, why don't you understand?
You have features that were blessed by the Motherland!
African descent has brought you here,
Don't you dare be ashamed of your skin my dear!
You're a young black girl with a beautiful mind,
Be proud of who you are! Never let anyone dull your shine!
She smiled, then stood proud and tall,
"I'm a young black girl and I will never fall!"
