This Year (2017-2018)
This Year
Hannah Bubar
This year is going to be one of the most difficult years of your life.
You should’ve come prepared,
But you can never prepare for the unknown.
You will assume that if you do things to prevent certain events,
Other events will arise.
You think you’re strong as 100 men put together,
But then realize you’re also as weak as paper.
At the beginning of every therapy session, you hear a recorded voice going,
“Close your eyes and let your tension leave your body.
Imagine your troubles are a dark cloud that you can blow away.
Breathe in, and relax..”
That calms you for a little while, but the anxiety is a demon,
Clinging to you, and whispering into your ear.
Their growl scares you, making them laugh because you give it power.
Even though you perform those exorcisms everyday to make it weak.
The feeling of drowning is so surreal.
One second you’re cruising through life,
The next, you’re in the cold, choppy water, and you can’t breathe.
Besides the troubling thoughts,
You will finally realize that you are beautiful,
Smart, funny, caring,
“A natural leader” your two favorite teachers say.
But they’re not just teachers, they’re your family.
You’re tired of all of the hurt, anxiety, and anger,
But you will not give up the fight.
Who cares about the people that drag you down,
It’s their loss that they can’t see what you’re about to discover.
You don’t have to seek for approval, even though you will never stop.
You don’t have to worry, even though you will never stop.
You will always be on guard, and that’s okay.
You got this, and I know that’s cliche, but it works anyway.
Yes that rhymed, and you like rhyming in your poems.
It takes your mind off of your anxiety.
You will become more confident,
Even though someone will say you shouldn’t be,
You won’t care and will still like yourself anyway.
Just keep doing what you’re doing, because you’re doing great.
You are not a failure.
No matter if your parents have said things that made you feel that way.
This year was tough, so make the next ones count.
