Years of Hiding

In life there is meaning

We don’t know it’s there

But as we grow old

We see it somewhere

As a young child

I learned some things

That helped me believe

I could achieve anything

But as I grew older

And the grades began to change

I felt the restraint

Of everything slowly becoming the same

Middle school

That was the primary goal

To allow yourself to pass

Without a single hold

To act like everything was alright

To not allow your true self into the light

High school

Was the best of years

Where true friends

Became a part of my atmosphere

I had confidence

Within myself

To behave the way

I always felt

I saw myself hiding

Who I truly was

To become something I wasn’t

Just like everyone

The years that have passed

Have allowed me to see

That the only thing holding me back

From being myself

Was me
