To You, In 2,000 Years
Former best friend,
if somehow you were able to get
ahold of my phone number
and call me
I wouldn’t know what
to say.
Your name still leaves a bad taste in
my mouth every time
I speak of you.
Should I be angry at you for calling it quits?
Knowing all my precious secrets?
Keeping pieces of myself I held most dear?
Or maybe,
I should be content to be able to hear your voice again?
Can we start over?
Lets put each other back together and return the things we took without permission.
I wish we could
re-create new memories we both
will forever cherish.
Former best friend,
if somehow we stumble across
each other at a
party
I wouldn’t know what
to do.
I imagine if I were to hug you, your hug would feel as empty as
birthday balloons.
Should I be upset I can’t look into your eyes without feeling resentment?
Why did you have to leave?
Whenever we fought, I was always the one to apologize, even if it
wasn't my fault.
I bit your bullets and swallowed your knives.
I ate your words no matter how harsh they were.
No, I should look beyond what's behind me. Behind us.
I should be excited to be able to see you once more.
Can we talk again?
Make each other smile as wide as the horizon?
You know,
I still remember when we used to walk home together.
Former best friend,
if somehow you were to
write me a letter
I wouldn’t know what
to write.
You see, you used to tell me
I can't fix a heart ache with
metaphors and ink on paper.
The same way I told you that suicidal tendencies can't
be fixed with razor blades or bullets.
And if you ever do write me a letter I'll respond with a poem about how much I hate you.
No matter how hard I tried to cheer you up, it just wasn't enough.
In the end, I guess the only thing I would say
is that I miss you
Former best friend,
I don’t expect you to do any of this.
I just hope that
if you do, one day,
I’ll be here
waiting for
you.
