You

It was always you.

Every touch, every whisper

Every hug, every look

The softness of your words

The gentleness of your hands

Even as friends,

It was always you.

Always watching,

Always waiting,

For the time I could be yours

But it didn’t come,

No, it dissolved,

Into the past, long forgotten.

But through it all

The mistakes, the regrets,

It was always you.

Time sped up,

Then slowed down

As the final year approached

And you decided,

Then and there

She will be mine,

I swear.

And finally,

After years of agonizing,

Pining,

Hoping,

Waiting,

I realized,

It was always you.
