You and Your Foreigner

It was something about you.

I never found you perfect

You wasn’t the best,

yet you weren’t like the rest.

For some time, you showed me what a family looked like.

Nice house, 3 kids, and a fiance.

Everything was alright.

2010.

What happened to the lady that I loved and cherished?

Everything you had just perished.

It was because he had “Middle Child Syndrome” that he ran away.

You owed him a lot of attention that you never had the time to pay.

He just wanted to be loved by you

but you were too

caught up into yourself that he didn’t exist.

But not just he

we.

The family we once had was crumbling down

One person at a time

When he went to jail for the 3rd time

you were non existent because he wasn’t good enough.

To us… the new guy was an intruder

Who is he?

Where’d you meet him?

Oh! you’re married already?

Why is this a surprise?

So many answerless questions

Now something’s wrong with this picture

because all he wanted to do what take care of you.

No, no buddy.

We’re a package, you have to take care of us too.

2012.

Now it’s just me, you, and your foreigner

But in your eyes, I was the newcomer.

You would ask him if he’s hungry before you asked me

when I was really the one starving

because you stopped cooking your favorite dinners.

You would leave me alone every sunday to go out with him.

You use to offer for me to go with

but I was, to be honest,

tired of the awkwardness.

2013.

“I’m pregnant”

This is great. I’ll finally have someone to keep me company

To keep me from being in this penitentiary

I felt like this lasted for centuries.

It’s a girl. Her name is Olawukemi.

She was beautiful from her head to her toes.

Her little dresses always matched her bows.

2014

“Kemi passed away”

I jumped around crying

But no one felt the hurt that I was feeling.

There was no type of healing that can help this pain.

Everything just went down the drain.

Back to the way it was before

where we was in our room

with close doors.

Oddly, it wasn’t all bad.

We talked about a lot of different things.

I felt like we were closer.

I told you a secret that was suppose to stay between me and you

but come to find out my grandma knew too.

It wasn’t the fact that she knew

haha, because she knew before you.

It was the fact that you didn’t know she knew

and I thought that I can trust you.

But I was obviously wrong

Everything that we were starting to build up

was certainly gone.

2015

Now it’s just me, you, and your foreigner

But my your eyes, you are the newcomer.
