You Ask Me Why I Write

You ask me why I write? I write because I am mortal I write because time is mine enemy you ask why I write? my name may not be remembered my words may not live on yet I still write you ask why I write? I write for you and me I write for the world around me I write for the ones on the front lines I write for the ones on the front at home I write for my countrymen I write for black and white I write for the unborn life I write for the wrongs done I write to make them right I write for present and future I write for the past for this life is stuck on repeat I write to leave this world behind not to be on cloud nine but to be wholly thine I write for the sea and air and the land between I write for Father God I write for Mother Nature you ask why I write? I write to do battle for the pen is not a sword but it leaves scars that cannot heal it defends what is real for the battle for the mind is waged on the field of the soul my war drum is my heart beating my cadence of attack is the music I make my sword is this pen my shield is this page my horse is this computer my enemies are many my allies are on one hand you cannot die and I am not afraid to for in death these words live on you ask why I write? I ask you to step into my world dominated by pain and sacrifice there is a light there is a hope for the fire that is lit inside of me it cannot be quenched it cannot be contained you ask where this hope is you don't see the light when you look into these eyes i ask if you see it now? for the fire is inside and the light shines it covers this page this pen is the torch it is all that I am given it is all that I need You ask me why I write? It is because I am full I am full of fire irrepressible I cannot help but set the world around me ablaze You ask me why I write. I write because I am Immortal.
