You know the rules

You know the rules

Keep your legs cross, throw away the key

Straighten your hair, bleach your skin

Cover 'em shoulders, cover where eyes can't see

Bigger grin, wider hips, oh but your stomach, keep it thin

Because you know the rules.

Lower your voice, in fact don't speak

Don't wear 'em clothes, your uncles are coming

Don't lift that skirt up any higher, don't give a sneak peak

Don't you dare have a mind of your own, we don't like what you're becoming

Why? Cause darling you know the rules

oh, your innocence is gone? You don't really need that

Because darling you know the rules

Fine, have a job, but don't you dare take days off for your child

Breastfeeding in public, are you really that vile?

Actually becoming successful, that's so wild

And you have the audacity to have your own lifestyle!

Darling, you know better, you know the rules.

That's awfully too long, too outdated, too gone

You really think you can go out looking hot, you're a mom

Don't you wear that color with that, your whole idea is wrong

Make me a sandwich, grab me beer, tuck the kids to sleep, always stay calm

Cause at the end of the day, darling, you know the rules

You're getting fat! You're too skinny. Proportion all off

Stretch marks? Hairy legs? What are you a monster?

You're too tall! You're too short! You run like a girl, you'll always be soft

Tend to female things, because you must bring honor

You're missing the point darling, don't you know the rules?

(Hey lil mama) Don't ignore that dude, he's totally hitting on you

(Well aren't you just a fine thing) He grabs your hips and your shoulders.

Don't you dare look uncomfortable, don't you dare look blue

(Fine, be that way! I didn't want you anyway) Now he thinks you're a freeloader.

I'm sorry, but darling, you know the rules

He thinks he's complimenting, of course. They all do

Doesn't understand that your heart sinks, you flinch, and you pray he doesn't linger

He thinks you should smile more, but who even smiles that much, who?

Oh how bad you wanted to lift up the middle finger.

But you must remember that you know the rules.

So you avoid it all, you try to follow yet there's still so much noise.

There's another rule to this, and you know, you're not amongst the fools.

Because while you're stressin', boys will always be boys.

And you know the rules.

"They say don't go chasing waterfalls, so I snapped it and expressed it through words so that all would know I reached the end of it though I remain sitting in my chair." -Gem Salutations my dear Conrad Thy Gem hath appeareth by thy hour I'm Gemora or Gem for short. I'm your typical food-loving teen who devotes herself to writing and drawing. But like great writers all know, there is always room for improvement so don't hesitate to leave a constructive criticism.
