You Know Who You Are

He told me that when the sky turned black, he saw me waiting.

He told me that he heard our song ringing in his ears,

He told me that my kisses left a funny taste in his mouth.

He told me he could smell my perfume in his air and my incense burn through his clothes,

He told me he saw my eyes shine for him, supposedly sending messages his way that couldn’t make it past my lips.

And he told me he felt my hands move in his, like my heart, ripped from my chest, by him, beating between his fingers.

He told that this was the night he loved me.

But when the sky turned black all I saw was you.

Your laugh rang in my ears over every word he spoke.

Your kisses left a taste in my mouth, that visits me on rainy days and in the presence of hot chocolate.

Our smells were entwined in the air, along with the time that I dropped my incense on your shoe and it really did burn through.

He saw my eyes shine for him, but they only ever shone for you, because if my lips spoke words of love they would have been severely misdirected towards his ears.

And my heart, you tore that out too. But I always trusted that at the end of the day, you would put it back, and sew me up.

It may have been the night he loved me, but every night since you left, is night that I love you.
