You Overcome

You think this is a rough patch.

That “I need to talk” means nothing

But I laugh knowing it means something

Monumental change

You never thought of me as anything but perfect

From my soft smile and goofy laugh

But now that it’s over,

You remember

You remember that I kept those pictures

That you told me to delete

I was ignorant to what was true

In a world I would never understand

I was persistent.

I never did anything that you didn’t want but maybe

I convinced you that you wanted it before you were ready

You were ready

You were young then

Before you gained the weight

Before you formed opinions

Before you were you

I had you at the perfect time

You couldn’t combat my stupidity

You couldn’t make yourself sound smarter than me

You couldn’t offend or hurt me because

You loved me

You

You are the fool here,

Not me

I keep all the pictures on my account

To prove that I can see it without hurting

Without thinking and obsessing about the smiles in the photos

The photos of me and her are still up

And whoever is next

And she either won’t say anything

Or she will

And I will ignore it like I did with you

Jealousy drowned me

But I learned to breathe underwater

And you resented me for that

And I made jokes that made you upset

You missed me for months

You thought of me fondly while I got drunk and

Hooked up with others

Better than you in every way

You kept to yourself after us

You still think of me when your phone corrects random words

My name and my nicknames

Bug.

You can’t say it and you never will

But you know that the words I used for you

Are being wrapped around another now

I call her Beauty

She is the most beautiful girl in the world

You are “crazy” like she was

You are tainted

You are not her

But that’s okay now

Because you are stronger than me

You’ve endured more

You’re happy without me

Even though you think of me at times

You have scars

Scars from being cut open

They left you bleeding

I have bruises that will be covered by falseness until they disappear

I am great but you are fantastic

You are a beast

A force of nature

You overcome

You overcome

You overcome

You don’t need me

And you don’t need anyone

You don’t hate me

You respect and you love and

You overcome
