You. Yes, You.
Dear Power Poetry,
You do not yet know me.
But to those who run this site,
I have a few words. If I might...
My name is Hunter,
It’s a pleasure!
And I’d like to speak to you
At your leisure.
I have immense admiration
And respect for the written word.
But I'm sure that you hear that from everyone.
What sets me apart from the herd?
Creativity is what drives
The art of poetry and prose.
Diction and imagery;
This stuff everybody knows.
Any good poet,
One that is certainly worth their name,
Knows that to conjure a line worthy of publication
Is no simply game.
Patience, focus,
Concentration and time,
Are virtues far more valuable
Than any clever rhyme.
With every great verse
There is meaning behind it.
An epic or tragedy to be found
By those who seek to find it.
But you know all of this,
All of you in Power Poetry.
Who does this kid think he is
To tell you how to compose a story?
Well, to be honest, I’ve been boasting
My yet meager knowledge of verse.
I hope that with a good first impression,
That I may prove my worth.
To be frank, to be blunt,
In full and total candor,
To win your thousand dollar scholarship,
Is the point of this rhythmic banter.
I have dreams of going to college,
A future in LSU!
A degree in Anthropology!
But I need some help from you.
I don’t mean to beg
Nor do I ask for a full ride,
But paying my way through university
Is like swimming against the tide.
Now one thousand dollars
Is quite a sum at the end of the day.
But aiding a child in his destiny
Would bring you great pleasure, wouldn’t you say?
The secrets of The Pyramids!
The origin of the Kiss!
A chance to be a part of these discoveries
Is not one to miss!
If you help me pay my tuition,
I will owe it all to you
When I’m discovering El Dorado,
And unveiling pharaohs’ tombs.
So I hope you consider me
When you grant the money to those
Who have caught your attention with rhyme,
Rythm, wit, and prose.
I pray that you grant me the medal!
Sincerely, Hunter Metzel.
