Your Letter
So your letter showed up, without welcome,
Without a thought to the inconvenience,
Decisive, smirking, sending me adrift,
Now speechless with anger at tiny things,
Laboring at subtitles, squinting hard,
Staring for hours at a work askew,
The hue not right, the pallet not yet dry,
Giving up, crying out, starting anew,
Returning at last to receive my words,
The unspoken feelings behind these blue eyes,
Resolving to try what will never happen,
Waiting for lightning in a cloudless sky,
Wait as a bird before the dawn: silent
Still before the page, waiting for the fire.
