The Zulu Blow Out

You've placed me on an island alone

and surrounded me with the sea

And then you have the nerve to ask

what's the one "thing" I'd want to take with me

Of course the logical answer would be

a skipper with a mate and a boat

But I have a feeling as I sit here and think

you're not looking for logic--take note!

The hypothetical question you've asked

should be answered as if it were real

So, here we go, it's survival time

When surviving this, this is the deal

I think I'd want a two person tent

that is made for easy erection

Or maybe I'd want a survival knife

for filleting a fish and protection

A foldout saw is nearly a must

or a hatchet would probably do

I can do many things with either one

such as split, chew, and hew

Matches and  bic-lighters, that's what I'd need

to build a fire at night

And for cooking the fish I'm about to catch

and keeping my camp warm and bright

Some rope is a thought, and it must be hemp

and you'll wonder why hemp is desired

You can split the fibers to make many things

such as tie downs, snares, and even a fire

A first aid kit for the obvious reasons

but for you I suppose I'll explain

It has alcohol, band-aids, ointments, and asprin

to protect from infection and pain

I'll need some hooks and fishing line

mother nature will provide the bait

Such as sand crabs, leeches, worms, and frogs

I'll throw out my line and wait

One pan and one cup for cooking and drinking

and for boiling and collecting the steam

Just incase I must drink from the saltwater pond

if the island has no stream

A camera, a radio, and a pair of sunglasses

for taking pictures and hoping for some news

Oh yeah. the glasses, they are for when I'm done swimming

and I lay on the beach and I take a snooze

On the days I decide to go out and explore

or just out and create a rumpus

I'll want to be sure that I cut out a trail

and a map the way back with my compass

A sleeping bag for comfort and warmth

on the nights that the wind has a chill

At this pont I'm starting to lose all my fears

and beginning to use all my skill

For sending a signal into the sky

and to see what I'm doing at night

I'd probably want to carry along

my trusty old hand crank flash light

A poncho, some gloves, a hypothermia kit

and a snake bit kit just incase

A hygiene kit and insect repellent

a sharpening stone and some mace

Zip ties, candles and a water proof pouch

some playing cards for when I am bored

A survival book, some flint, and my striker I'll need

and a fifty foot parachute cord

And now you are thinking... good grief, what a list

apparently she didn't understand

We asked her to choose one "thing" to take with her

and she's created a list of demands

No, I have not, I have followed the rules

you asked for one "thing" not one "item"

I'll be taking my "Zulu Bug Out Bag"

they have all this and more inside them

And at 36 pounds it's easy to tote

And won't take much space on the rescue boat!
